Scheduling a VA dental appointment starts with one important step: confirming that you are eligible for VA dental care. VA dental benefits are not automatically available to every Veteran, even if the Veteran is already enrolled in VA health care.
First, make sure you are enrolled in VA health care. Veterans who are not yet enrolled need to apply for VA health care before visiting a VA dental clinic. If you are already enrolled, you do not need to apply again.
Next, check your dental eligibility. VA dental benefits depend on factors such as service-connected disability status, former prisoner-of-war status, homelessness risk, participation in certain VA programs, or whether the dental condition is connected to another VA-approved medical condition.
Once eligibility is confirmed, find the nearest VA dental clinic. The VA provides dental care at more than 200 locations across the United States, including Alaska and Puerto Rico. You can use the VA clinic locator online or contact your local VA medical center directly.
To schedule the appointment, call the dental clinic or your VA medical center. Some appointments may also be requested or managed through VA.gov or My HealtheVet, depending on your local VA facility and the type of care needed.
When calling, be ready to provide your full name, date of birth, last four digits of your Social Security number, and a brief explanation of your dental issue. If you are in pain, have swelling, infection symptoms, broken teeth, or trouble eating, say that clearly so the clinic can decide how urgent the appointment is.
If you do not qualify for free VA dental care, you may still have options. The VA Dental Insurance Program, known as VADIP, allows eligible Veterans and some family members to purchase private dental insurance at a reduced cost.
Veterans may also contact Smile for Service, a veteran-focused dental care initiative created to help connect Veterans with dental support, guidance, and treatment options. Smile for Service is especially helpful for Veterans who are not eligible for full VA dental benefits, are facing long wait times, or need help understanding where to start.
Smile for Service is not a replacement for VA benefits. Veterans who qualify for VA dental care should use those benefits first. But for Veterans who fall through the gaps, Smile for Service may help them explore available care options, including free or discounted treatment, case-by-case support, and referrals through participating dental offices.
The key is simple: confirm your VA dental eligibility first, contact the nearest VA dental clinic, explain your dental issue clearly, and ask what documents or referrals are needed before the visit. If VA dental care is not available to you, contact Smile for Service to see what other dental support may be possible.
